Bob's Your Uncle: A Dictionary of Slang for British Mystery Fans
Published in Paperback by Fithian Press (September, 1992)
Author: Jann Turner-Lord
Average review score:

An abbreviated glimpse at British slang that puzzles readers
Jann Turner-Lord's "Bob's Your Uncle" is a slender volume of only 62 pages, yet it is often humourous and informative. With this decryption tool, you can now appreciate paragraph's such as: "That Henry! He is always acting off his own bat! All mouth and no trousers, ever since he was a sprog; he should really consult a trick cyclist!I mean sure, sometimes his manners can be all gas and gaiters, but yesterday I just wanted him to naff off. I think I will just put on my plimsolls and scarper over to his house and tell him not to get so shirty. And don't worry, I promise not to let it turn into a slang-match!"

You can bet your sosh that this book will better prepare you for reading books by British authors, or Bob's Your Uncle!

Controlling Pilot Error: Checklists & Compliance
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Professional (01 June, 2001)
Author: Thomas P. Turner
Average review score:

A Good Book on Checklist Compliance; A Better One Needed
Thomas P. Turner's volume on "Checklists & Compliance" is a good and worthwhile effort. As part of McGraw Hill's new series on "Controlling Pilot Error", edited by Col. Tony Kern, it focuses on a critical and under-explored area of pilot shortcomings that is exceptionally relevant to all pilots - airline, military and general aviation alike.

The book is largely a compilation of ASRS and NTSB reports that should prove eye-opening to any aviator who does not as a matter of course access these resources. We can all profit from reviewing these items.

Unfortunately, the book only scratches the surface in deriving lessons learned and developing recommended practices based on the reviewed incidents. In particular, it fails to offer any insight into the intricacies of checklist design or specific techniques for use.

There is no mis-information in this book; a pilot can only benefit from reading it. But we still await an exceptional book on checklist design, application, discipline and implementation.

Domain Names: a Practical Guide
Published in Paperback by Tolley Publishing Co Ltd (21 June, 2002)
Authors: Simon Halberstam, Joanne Brook, and Jonathan D.C. Turner
Average review score:

Thorough Domain Legal Review for Legal Types
This is the book to buy if you're looking for a thorough legal guide to domain names. Perhaps too thorough and legal-technical for the non-legal type; you won't find much technical or marketing help in this book.

Written by three attorneys in the United Kingdom, this 287-page book touches on all legal aspects of domain name registrations, trademark issues, sales and transactions and dispute resolution. Although provided with a heavily European flavor, the book will surely prove useful to anyone wanting to brush up on domain name legalese and case law throughout the world.

Applicable to any domain holder, the book does suggest registering your domain name as a trademark in as many classifications as possible in as many countries as possible, to avoid any future headaches. In addition, I was made aware of the "Madrid Agreement" whereby trademark applications are shared across 40 countries, simplifying the application process for any domain holder.

The book does attempt to address domain appraisal methods and secondary markets, however lackluster. The authors would have been better sticking to their business of legalese, as that is where this book shines.

The golden hordes : international tourism and the pleasure periphery
Published in Unknown Binding by Constable ()
Author: Louis Turner
Average review score:

The Dark Side of Tourism
The book's main argument is that tourism transforms destinations into undifferentiated and unpoliticized spaces in which hordes of 'barbarians' purchase and consume physical and emotional pleasure. For the authors, mass tourism brings valuable foreign exchange that can add to local income in peripherical countries, but there is a high price to be paid: the systematic destruction of the landscape and the corruption of the local culture.

The Holy War Idea in Western and Islamic Traditions
Published in Hardcover by Pennsylvania State Univ Pr (Txt) (June, 1997)
Author: James Turner Johnson
Average review score:

Garbled but useful reading
I found the structure of this book to be very garbled. Although the titles suggest that he intends to cover one tradition, then the other, in effect he keeps shifting from one to the next so that in the end, everything is lumped in together. If you struggle through, you'll get some good information out of it.

Instrumentation for Engineers and Scientists (Textbooks in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 8)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (May, 1999)
Authors: Martyn Hill and John D. Turner
Average review score:

Not yet for real life
Actually, I'm working with strain gages and operacional amplifiers for study impact waves in iron. I buy this book after build an amplifier unit and install strain gages and measure impact waves, and in past years I use and designed flow meters. This book is very superficial. An experimenter need that somebody take information from electrical books, manufacturer manuals(strain gages), signal analysis books, fluid dynamics books, solid mechanics books, etc. and explain its use in instrumentation. Most people know what a strain gage is...is not a mistery!. The real challenge is to make the system work! and know that a strain gage is a electrical resistance don't help. Between this book and a real life aplication exist a long road(start in this book and finish in the system working).

Layla and Majnun
Published in Hardcover by Blake Pub (September, 1997)
Authors: Colin Turner, Ganjavi Nizami, and Nizami Ganjavi
Average review score:

Dissappointing Job with a World Masterpiece
I hate being negative; but I have to in this case. I have been a student of epic literature for a long time and I particularly enjoy the early Islamic/Persian poems in the genre. Nizami tops the list of these poets with the likes of Omar Kayyam and Farid uddin al Attar. So, I was particularly happy to discover this translation of the Majnun and Layla and ordered it from Amazon.com. My joy quickly turned to disappointment. There is so much compression, so much excision of the philosophical and allegorical content of the work, it becomes little more than a 3rd rate Romeo and Juliet. In fact, it is much much more than that. Three stars because it is great to have a translation, any translation. But now (2000), one of the great modern classic translations, first made available from Shambala press (1978), is available again and you should get that one. Translated by Omid Safi and reprinted by Omega Publications. The work, particularly in this guise, will knock your socks off.
